Minecraft 1.3 is coming out soon, and with it you can write in books. While they may not sound exciting, it really is! With the books, our server can have long messages (+10,000 characters). We can have instructions placed in these books and IOU messages can be made since only if you write the book is your name signed on it. See the whole article on the wiki.
With how the poll is going, I have some ideas on what we can do to make everyone happy!
Bane's MCWZ will be built in its own world and after every battle can be reset so we can save time not having to rebuild it. That should satisfy those who like PvP :D
For building, sometimes when an op is on you can have temporary op rights maybe so you can use World Edit, which helps you build even faster!
For those who want more stories, I will work on making some exiting adventures ;)
However, the thing most want is...SURVIVAL! I agree with you guys, we don't do much surviving even though that is how we all start out in MC. That is why we are going to have an entire island dedicated to surviving! There we can actually use the economy mod and buy and sell and barter. I may be selling iron ingots for $5 and buying some gold for $4. Should be fun! My idea on the layout of the island is there will be all the biomes in this enclosed area. A large tree is in the middle. The floor of the island is y=30 so we can have more height. The land will be about 1000 blocks in each direction. On the edges are these tall, very steep cliffs. On these cliffs is a little bit more land that connects to the ocean. A VERY SIMPLE picture of what may be built is below.

I like all the ideas except the PvP one. It sounds like this world will have matches instead of being a full time PvP world. My idea is that we have 1 world where there aren't matches or a space limit and you can do nearly anything you want. This would have rules like no spawn killing, no portal blocking, ect. We could even have blocked in arenas where you fight to the death in dangerous environments for resources. To put it simple you have the entire world available for PvP. All rules would be...
